Three camping pillows for different priorities

The useful split is foam, a foam-and-air hybrid, and a minimal inflatable. A small packed bundle does not tell you whether the pillow will support your head on your own sleeping pad.

Manufacturer specifications checked October 2026; named sizes only.
    Pillow Choose it for
Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow Cinch Foam fill and adjustable cinch; car camping and avoiding an air valve.
NEMO Fillo Regular Foam over an air chamber; 265 g packed, 17 × 11 × 4 inches in use.
Aeros Ultralight Regular, current model 57 g packed; 34 × 26 × 11 cm in use; small backpacking loads.

The Compressible Pillow Cinch uses foam pieces and a cinch adjustment. It makes sense when you want a pillow without inflation and can spare the packing space. Unpack it early so the compressed fill can recover.

Trade-off: foam occupies space even when compressed. For a long walk with a small pack, compare its packed bulk against an inflatable. Choose the size deliberately; a small pillow is not simply a lighter version of the same sleeping surface.

NEMO Fillo Regular: adjustable support with a padded surface

The current Fillo Regular combines an air chamber with a foam layer and a removable washable cover. Its valve lets you adjust firmness independently of how tightly you packed it. The maker lists a 6 × 4-inch packed bundle.

Trade-off: its 265 g packed weight is substantial beside a minimal inflatable. The Fillo, Fillo Elite and Fillo Wide are different models; do not transfer one model’s weight or dimensions to another.

Aeros Ultralight Regular: the weight-focused choice

The current Aeros Ultralight Regular packs at 57 g and includes PillowLock patches. This is the shortlist option for a small pack, provided you like the feel of an air pillow.

Trade-off: it lacks the Fillo’s foam layer. Compare the current model and size with the listing you are actually buying; older Aeros specifications differ. The published packed-weight difference between these two regular models is 208 g: 265 minus 57.

How to choose a camping pillow that fits your sleep setup

Decision guide based on pillow construction and your own fit check.
    Your situation What to check
Driving to camp Try your normal pillow first. A dedicated camping model mainly buys easier packing and cleaning.
Walking with a small pack Compare packed weight and volume, then check inflated comfort.
Sleeping on your side Test usable loft while lying on the actual pad; advertised maximum height is not loaded height.
Pillow slides away Check retention compatibility, or use a pillow sleeve that fits your pad.

Why does an inflatable feel too hard?

Start with enough air to support your head, then release a little while lying down. Maximum inflation is a shape specification, not a comfort setting. Recheck after changing sleeping position. Do not buy a model solely because its listed height is larger.

Should you buy the smallest size?

Measure the sleeping-bag hood and the space where your head actually rests. A tiny pillow can save weight but leave little room when you turn over. A large one may crowd the hood. This is a fit decision that a universal ranking cannot settle.

    How this shortlist was chosen

This Gear Forum editorial update compares current manufacturer specifications, construction, cleaning arrangements and packing trade-offs. The earlier personal accounts remain below the opening update. These recommendations do not turn those accounts into new testing results.

For carrying spare bedding and clothes, the clothes-storage discussion covers the difference between organisation and rain protection. Owners can make this thread more useful by naming their pillow size, sleeping position and pad.
