What size dry bag should you buy for camping?

Pack the actual items before choosing capacity. A bulky fleece and spare shoes need a different shape from a few thin base layers, even when both are described as a weekend clothing kit.

Practical packing checks; these are not guaranteed item-to-liter capacities.
    Check Why it matters
Closure allowance The top must make the manufacturer’s required rolls without forcing the contents down.
Bag shape A long narrow bag may pack awkwardly around rigid objects.
Separate essentials Keep dry sleeping clothes apart from items you open repeatedly in the rain.
Exposure An internal liner and a bag strapped outside a pack face different abrasion.

Does a higher waterproof fabric rating make the whole bag submersible?

No. The whole closure system must be suitable for immersion. A stronger fabric or a large hydrostatic-head number cannot compensate for water entering through a roll-top. Do not use a dry bag as a flotation device.

What should you inspect before a trip?

Look for grit in the closure, holes, damaged seams and peeling internal coating. Check the manufacturer’s care and closure instructions before loading valuables. Test with expendable contents in conditions the maker permits; deliberately dunking a non-submersible bag tests it outside its intended use.

Let wet bags dry before storage. Avoid putting damp clothes into the same closed bag as your dry sleeping kit. The clothes-storage guide covers that separation; shoe bags cover muddy footwear.

Gear Forum’s editorial comparison uses manufacturer specifications and stated use limits. If you reply with a recommendation, include the model, capacity, how you closed it and whether it was inside a pack, exposed to spray or actually immersed.
