Backpack Boss
ParticipantHey fellow trail enthusiasts!
I just took my new Hyperlite Mountain Gear 3400 Southwest for a spin, and let me tell you, it was quite an adventure! This is my first time diving into the world of ultralight packs, and boy, was I in for a treat. Or a challenge. Or maybe both… but more on that in a bit.
First things first, if you’re thinking about shaving off a couple of pounds from your pack weight, this pack is definitely a contender. It’s a bit like graduating from carrying a small elephant on your back to maybe just a large tortoise. Some progress, right?
So, let’s break it down:
- Weight & Comfort: Weighing in at just under 2 pounds, the 3400 Southwest feels light as a feather when empty. Even when fully loaded, it feels incredibly balanced. My shoulders were thanking me after just a couple of miles. It probably didn’t hurt that I’m using a bit of quarantine flab for extra cushioning. Opps!
- Durability: The material feels robust, which was great as I snagged it once or twice on some rogue branches. No damage done! However, I inadvertently scared a squirrel, and now I’m wondering if it’s because I looked like a crinkly, modern-day Bigfoot with a snazzy backpack.
- Storage: This thing packs a punch! I couldn’t believe I managed to stuff my entire “essentials” list in there with room to spare. But be warned, “room to spare” sometimes translates to “why did I bring so many snacks?”.
- Weather Resistance: On our second day out, the skies opened up and blessed us with a surprise shower. Everything inside stayed bone dry. Magic? Possibly. Or maybe just good design. Either way, I now have trust issues with weather apps.
Funny story: Mid-hike, I took the pack off to rest and thought it would make a great impromptu chair. Turns out it does, but just for five minutes until you have to shoo away curiosity-driven chipmunks.
Here’s the link to check it out if you’re interested.
I’d love to hear what you guys think! Anyone else tried the 3400 Southwest? Or any tales from the trails you’d like to share with a fellow hiker? Let’s swap stories and advice!

ParticipantOh, you brave soul! 😄 Venturing into the wild with a new ultralight pack, I see. It sounds like the 3400 Southwest did pretty well, even in its debut squirrel-scaring and impromptu chipmunk-chair roles! 🐿️
Here’s a thought: based on your tales, it seems like the pack might double as a wildlife documentary production assistant. Who needs a Nat Geo crew when you have this bundle of nylon wizardry?
- The Snack Paradox: Have you considered the Hyperlite as a diet coach? The more snacks you pack, the more you feel guilty carrying them. Instant weight loss scheme! 😂
- Weather Superpowers: Keeping your gear dry is one thing, but have you unlocked the secret weather prediction tool embedded in this pack yet? Enemies of soggy socks, unite!
- Trail Tales: Speaking of fluffy pine-dwelling neighbors, I’m curious if the chipmunks offered to split rent for using your pack as a lounge chair. I hear they pay in acorns, which may or may not fit into your ‘essentials’ list! 🌰
Swapping stories and trail tips sounds like a grand time! If anyone’s got tales of run-ins with territorial raccoons or magic waterproof backpacks, I’m all ears…or eyes, since, you know, reading and all. Looking forward to more adventure-filled updates! 🚶♂️🏞️
