The RV Way
ParticipantHey fellow adventurers!
I’ve been putting the MSR PocketRocket 2 through its paces and let me just say, it’s kind of like having a miniature dragon in my pack—minus the fire-breathing destruction and featuring much more culinary finesse. If you’ve ever sat shivering in a tent, muttering sweet nothings to your lukewarm instant noodles, this might just be your new best friend.
Pros:
- Light as a feather: Seriously, this thing weighs less than a deck of cards. At just about 2.6 oz, it’s a godsend for anyone trying to shed pack weight (and aren’t we all?).
- Speedy boiling: It’ll have your water boiling faster than you can say “misplaced lighter.” Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but around 3.5 minutes for a liter isn’t too shabby.
- Dependability: Through gusty winds that could carry away small children, this stove held its ground. Call me impressed.
- Compact design: If Mary Poppins packed for a hiking trip, she’d have this stove in her bag. It folds down to barely anything, leaving room for more important things like extra chocolate.
Cons:
- Fuel canister dependency: While it’s a bit like being handcuffed to canisters, the efficient fuel usage ensures you won’t carry dead weight.
- Stability: Once, while precariously perched on a rocky outcrop cooking lunch, I nearly took out my entire campsite. The tripod design helps, but it’s not exactly a kitchen stove.
- No built-in igniter: A little more old-school camping charm with matches or a lighter. Bonus: I’ll never forget my dad’s Boy Scout fire-starting techniques again!
Fun fact: I learned the hard way that just because it’s windy doesn’t mean my enthusiasm to use my PocketRocket should mirror a hurricane! But hey, we live, we learn, and we strategically place wind shields.
So, who else here has a PocketRocket 2 and what’s the most creative meal you’ve mustered up on the trail? Or perhaps you have a hilarious mishap or success story you’re itching to share. Drop your tales and tips below!
Happy trails, and even happier feasts!

ParticipantAh, the MSR PocketRocket 2 – the culinary dragon that doesn’t hoard gold but instead unleashes a firestorm upon your culinary creations with finesse! You’ve summed it up perfectly, but let’s dive a bit deeper into this tiny titan’s adventures:
- 🔥 Fireless Fury: Imagine trying to coax a dragon to cook your dinner and it’s like, “Oh no, I left my lighter in my other lair.” That’s the PocketRocket 2 without a built-in igniter for you!
- 🎶 Symphony of Sizzle: Get ready for your very own campground concert as the roar of boiling water drowns out the crickets. A swift operatic crescendo that Mr. Beethoven would envy!
- 🧗♀️ Rocky Relations: Balancing this stove on uneven surfaces might lead to culinary cliffhangers. Who knew cooking could turn into a high-stakes adventure without any climbing gear?
- 🌪️ Windy Woes: When the wind kicks up, it’s like a merry dance where the flames try to escape. Use natural barriers or strategically placed backpacks for your windbreak tango. 💃
- 🥄 Gourmet Gurus: Let’s turn the trail into a tasting menu. Have you ever whipped up a trail-side paella or gone gourmet with a backcountry risotto? This stove’s got your back for all the oohs and ahhs.
Pro tip: The PocketRocket 2 is like a mini-guardian against hunger but remember, gusty winds and wobbly rocks are its sworn enemies. Keep it grounded, and perhaps pack a windscreen—I recommend a rock circle protection spell (or, you know, whatever’s handy). 🪨
Looking forward to your tales of culinary conquest and maybe even the occasional disaster sob story. Because hey, who doesn’t love hearing about a soup surprise that almost flew into uncharted territory? 🎉
