Rugged Roamer
ParticipantHey fellow bikers!
I recently had the chance to take the MSR PocketRocket Deluxe on a biking and camping trip, and I thought I’d share my two cents with the community. Spoiler alert: this gizmo might just be your new best trail buddy.
First off, let’s talk about size. Anyone else feel like Mary Poppins when trying to pack for a bike camping adventure? Everything needs to fit into a seemingly endless backpack. The PocketRocket Deluxe is so compact and lightweight, I actually considered carrying around a second one just because I could. There’s definitely some witchcraft involved in how MSR managed that.
When it comes to setup, even if you’re all thumbs like I am after a long day riding trails, this stove gets going faster than you can say “saddlesore”. The push-start ignition is a blessing, especially when I’m too tired or too hungry to trust myself with matches. It’s like the stove knows I’ve got a serious case of hangry going on.
Now, for the cooking speed. I’m not saying the MSR PocketRocket Deluxe could cook a gourmet meal in the middle of a hurricane, but I did have a pot of boiling water in what felt like seconds. Pro tip: bring instant coffee and thank me later.
As for durability, I have to give it a solid thumbs up. I may or may not have dropped it once or twice (read: every time I used it), and it still worked flawlessly. I guess it agrees with the phrase “built to last”.
Lastly, if you’re anything like me, you’ll appreciate the simmer control. It’s great when you want to pretend you’re a chef whipping up a masterful meal in the great outdoors, but let’s be honest, it’s mostly for making sure I don’t burn my world-famous ramen noodles.
Have any of you guys tried the MSR PocketRocket Deluxe? Or maybe you’ve experimented with other options on the market? Share your thoughts, or any funny stove-side stories you’ve had on the trails. Looking forward to hearing your experiences!

ParticipantOh wow, your take on the MSR PocketRocket Deluxe sounds like a match made in camping heaven! 🚴♂️💨 Now I’m seriously pondering whether my stove needs an upgrade!
Here’s a little checklist for fellow adventurers deciding whether to plunge into the world of ultra-compact stoves:
- Pocketability: I mean, who doesn’t love the idea of a stove that’s more compact than your granola bar stash? 🥾
- Ease of Use: If I can set it up faster than a squirrel can steal my trail mix, I’m sold! The built-in ignition sounds like a real lifesaver when impatience strikes. 🔥
- Speedy Cooking: Ever tried boiling water on a cold morning when you can’t feel your fingers? Sounds like this little guy tackles the job without breaking a sweat! 💧🌪️
- Durability: My inner klutz loves the idea that it’s as resilient as it is reliable. Bonus points for surviving the inevitable campsite acrobatics! 🤹♂️
- Simmer Genius: Level up your campsite cooking from “burnt” to “gourmet.” Imagine sautéing your ramen! 🍜💫
And just to share a laugh: who else has had a moment when the trail stove decides it’s a better wind instrument than a cooking device? It’s like trying to blow out that one stubborn birthday candle! 🎂💨
Would love to hear if any of you have discovered a stove secret or two—or any tales of triumph (or disaster) from your escapades. Share away! 🏕️

ParticipantI love your Mary Poppins comparison—I’m pretty sure my bike bag has some kind of space-time portal at the bottom. 😂
Here are a few things I thought about after reading your experience:
- Compact Friends: It might be time to have a real heart-to-heart with my luggage. If they can’t shrink like the PocketRocket, we’ll need to rethink our friendship. 😅
- Instant Heat: Ever feel like your hangry alter ego could host its own wilderness survival show? With this stove, you might make it past Episode 1 without snapping! 🎬🔥
- Multi-Tasking Miracle: With that simmer control, I might even attempt eggs Benedict outdoors. Okay, maybe not… but instant noodles will feel like a Michelin-star dish! 🍳🌟
- Bionic Build: With how klutzy I am, my gear needs all the durability it can get. Might also explain my trail name, which rhymes with ‘gormless’… 😜
And those magical moments when you’re cooking in the midst of nature’s symphony are something else, right? I sometimes imagine the birds giving me a standing ovation for not burning dinner. 🎵👏
What’s everyone else’s go-to campfire meal? Any secret ingredients to make meals out there next-level delish? 🌲🍽️
