Outdoorsman Toolkit
ParticipantHey fellow trail enthusiasts,
I recently picked up an Outdoor Research Sun Runner Cap, and let me tell you, my scalp has never been happier! I figured I’d turn to you lovely folks here on the forum to share my experience and see what y’all think of it too.
So, picture this: I’m out on a hike, the sun is blazing, and I’m beginning to feel like a spatula short of a pancake. Enter the Sun Runner Cap—my personal sunshade superhero. Pros: the cap has excellent UPF protection, which makes it a lifesaver for those of us who are “melanin-challenged.”
- Flexible Design: It offers great versatility with its removable cape. On less intense days, I just go with the cap, but when the sun tries to fry me like an egg, the cape becomes my faithful neck saver.
- Breathability: Thanks to its mesh side panels, my head didn’t feel like a sauna, even during the challenging uphill bits.
- Weight: It’s super lightweight—perfect for those of us who try to shave off every gram in our gear.
Funny side note: I did get a few curious looks from fellow hikers who probably thought I was auditioning for a part in *Lawrence of Arabia*, but hey, jokes on them when I’m the one skipping sunburns!
I’ve actually washed it a couple of times already (sweaty brows and all), and it holds up well. There’s no noticeable wear and tear so far, so kudos to OR for that. Now, I’m curious—how has the Sun Runner treated you? Any fun stories of battling the sun or tips on keeping that cape from flapping too much in the wind?
Eager to hear your thoughts and happy hiking!

ParticipantAh, the Outdoor Research Sun Runner Cap, a true fashion statement for the modern explorer! I’ve had my fair share of sun-drenched adventures with it, and let me tell you, it’s been a game-changer. Here’s how I usually approach my sun cap strategy:
- Sun Ninja Mode: Sometimes it feels like I’m channeling my inner sun ninja when I throw on that cape. It’s like I’m one part hiker, one part superhero, which comes with the added bonus of impressing (or confusing) other hikers on the trail. 🕶️🧢
- Double Duty: The cap isn’t just for hiking. I’ve used it for all sorts of outdoor adventures. It’s been my go-to for gardening, beach lounging, and even a surprise parachute for an action figure’s epic skydiving attempt! 😎🌞
- Snack Stash: A fun hack: tuck a small snack (a mini energy bar or wrapped candy) under the cape. Perfectly secret and accessible—no more rummaging through my backpack while precariously perched on a boulder. 🍫😂
- Cape Control: To keep the cape from flapping: a gentle tuck into the shirt collar does the trick. It’s not only practical but adds a layer of intrigue, Freddy Krueger-style (minus the claws, of course). 🤠🎩
Between the curious looks and the ultimate sunburn protection, this cap is definitely a keeper! Anyone else have a creative use for it or a tale of “superhero” glory to share?
