River Rat Gear
ParticipantHey fellow adventurers and fur-parent enthusiasts!
I recently got my paws—oops, I mean hands—on the PetSafe Happy Ride Telescoping Ramp and thought I’d pop in to give you all the lowdown on this nifty bit of gear. If you’re a weekend warrior like me who loves taking your doggo on every possible adventure, you’ll want to give this post a read!
First things first, let me just say that assembling this ramp was easier than getting my dog, Max, out of bed on a Monday morning. The telescoping feature is super cool because it means you can adjust the length depending on where you’re using it—car, RV, or even that steep hill that Fido usually belly-flops down.
Here’s what I absolutely loved:
- Lightweight Yet Sturdy: This ramp is like the superhero of ramps—only 13 lbs but it feels like it could hold a Great Dane.
- Non-Slip Surface: My Max tends to take ramps like they’re a speedway, and this ramp’s surface prevents him from doing his best slip n’ slide impression.
- Adjustability: It goes from 39” to 72” which means no more awkward lifting for me (or Max facing his nemesis, gravity).
- Easy Storage: It’s compact when folded and doesn’t take up a ton of room in the trunk. More space for snacks!
But let’s get real for a moment. It’s not all wagging tails and belly rubs. The one thing I found a tad tricky was getting Max used to the ramp at first. He looked at it like it was an alien spaceship sent to abduct his treats. Tip: A little treat encouragement goes a long way!
“Max struggled initially but a trail of kibble worked wonders. Now he’s practically running up it like he’s scaling Mount Everest… though he could just be rushing to see if I’m hiding bacon.” – Me, bribing my way to ramp success.
I’d love to hear if any of you have tried this or if you’ve got tips/tricks to make the process smoother! What’s your pup’s favorite ramp to rival this one, or do they still prefer old-school leap-of-faith methods? Let’s get chatting!

ParticipantHa! Your adventure with Max and the ramp sounds paws-itively awesome! 🐾 I’ve had similar escapades with my own furball. If you’re looking for more tips to get Max racing up that ramp, here’s what worked for me:
- Familiar Scents: I rubbed my pup’s favorite blanket on the ramp first. It seemed to make it less “alien invader” and more “welcome mat”.
- Double Trouble: If you have a buddy with a dog, get together for a ramp playdate. Seeing a peer hop right on up can sometimes be the best nudge.
- Playtime: Use it for at-home play! Place their favorite toy at the top and let them snatch it. Fun distraction and useful training in one!
- Stage a Talent Show: Encourage your pup to go up and down while you cheer like it’s a grand performance. 🎤 My dog loved being the star of his own “dog ramp idol”.
If Max ever writes his own memoirs, I’m betting “Ramp Conqueror” makes it into the title! Can’t wait to hear more about your adventures and any ramp champs Max might inspire! 😄

ParticipantOh, I feel you on the alien spaceship vibe! 😂 My pup once treated our new ramp like it was a vampire ready to suck the wag right out of him. But persistence—and treats—always win the day, right? Here are a few more quirky tips that helped me navigate the ramp revolution:
- Ramp Dance Party: Turn on some foot-tapping tunes and have a little dance party at the base of the ramp. A wiggling behind and their favorite squeaky toy can create a festival mood that even the grumpiest of pups can’t resist.
- Treat Puzzler: Use the ramp as a platform for a fun treat puzzle. Place a toy with treats inside at the top and let them puzzle their way there. Who knew the way to a pup’s heart was through their, um, intelligence?
- Costume Day: Dress them in a silly outfit (think superhero cape) and call it “Super Pup Ramp Run.” It doesn’t actually help the dog get up the ramp any faster, but it makes for hilarious photos you’ll want to share everywhere! 📸
- Morning Coffee Chat: Sit at the top of the ramp with your morning coffee. Chat with your buddy like you would at a cafe, except with treats casually ‘falling’ down the ramp. They might just wander up for a nibble while you sip on your latte.
Honestly, there’s nothing like witnessing that magical moment when they finally get it. Suddenly you’re a proud paw-rent beaming with joy as if they’ve mastered calculus! Keep at it, and Max will be a “Master of the Ramps” in no time! 🥇🐶

ParticipantHahaha, love the idea of Max battling an alien spaceship! 🚀 I’ve had some ramp-induced theatrics with my furball, too. Here are a couple of other creative ways to win over Max:
- Artistic Ramp: Let Max personalize his ramp! A paw painting session could turn it into a ramp masterpiece and make it less intimidating. Bonus: You’ll have a one-of-a-kind art piece! 🎨🐾
- Role Reversal: Try crawling up the ramp yourself while making playful noises. Sometimes showing them “how it’s done” inspires even the most skeptical pups to follow suit. Plus, who could resist a human on all fours? 🤣
- Ramping up the Drama: Create an action-packed story where Max is the heroic dog saving the day by reaching the top. A little storytelling can make the ramp an exciting stage rather than a daunting slope. 🎬🐾
- Pile of Pillows: You can pile up some comfy cushions on the other side of the ramp. The idea of plunging into a fluffy pile might be too tempting for Max to resist! 🛏️
Hope these extra shenanigans help! Can’t wait to hear about the next chapter in Max’s ramp saga—maybe he’ll be giving pointers to other pups soon! 🐕✨
