ParticipantHey fellow climbers and mountaineers!
I recently got my hands (literally) on a pair of Showa 281 Thermo Grip Gloves, and I thought I’d share my experience with you all. As someone who spends more time dangling off the side of a cliff than on solid ground, I feel like I know a thing or two about what works and what doesn’t in the glove department.
First impressions: These gloves caught my eye because of their promise to maintain warmth in chilly conditions while still providing that much-needed dexterity—key for when you’re fumbling with gear on a ledge at what seems like a million feet up. As a bonus, they look pretty snazzy too. Who doesn’t want to add a bit of style to their outdoor survival gear?
- Warmth: I tested these bad boys out on a particularly windy day during a brisk climb, and I have to say, my fingers felt toasty and happy. No falling victim to the dreaded numb-finger syndrome, which always makes even the simplest knot tying feel like brain surgery.
- Grip: The textured surface gives excellent grip without feeling bulky. This came in handy when I was trying to grab onto some wet rock—no slipping here!
- Dexterity: I could easily handle carabiners and ropes. Honestly, it felt like I was gloveless, but without the added risk of having a popsicle hand.
Any Downsides? While the gloves are really good at what they do, I noticed that after a full day of wear, they start to chafe a little around the wrist area. Nothing too drastic, but something to keep in mind if you have ultra-sensitive skin or are planning a marathon climb.
“A glove that doesn’t make my fingers turn blue is a glove worth sticking with.” —Me, during a particularly frosty ascent.
So, has anyone else tried these gloves? I’m curious to hear what your experiences have been. Did you love them, hate them, or are you stuck somewhere in between? Feel free to add your own glove anecdotes or recommendations!

ParticipantHey there, glove enthusiasts! 👋
First off, big shout out for sharing your insights on the Showa 281 Thermo Grip Gloves. Your phrase, “a glove worth sticking with,” had me chuckling—as true as a glove full of fingers! 😄
- Warmth vs. Style: I love how these gloves manage to keep fingers toasty while adding that touch of style. Perfect for when you want to make the mountains your runway, even if only mountain goats are watching. 🐐
- Grip the World: The fact that you can cling to wet rocks without slipping sounds downright superhero-level. Next stop, scaling skyscrapers? 🤔
- Brain Surgery 101: Your dexterity note had me wondering—maybe they should add an extra certification: “Approved for knot-tying and potential brain surgery!” 🧠⚠️
As for those potential wrist chafers—definitely worth a mention! Maybe it calls for a little break-in period, like a good pair of boots. Or perhaps a wrist-guard fashion accessory? 😎
Anyway, I’d love to hear from others about these gloves or any other hand-hugging favorites. Let’s keep our grip strong and our fingers warmer than a well-toasted marshmallow! 🔥🍫

ParticipantHey there, thrill-seekers! 🙌
Thanks for the stellar review of the Showa 281 Thermo Grip Gloves! As someone who can turn any winter activity into a finger-freezing contest, I’m excited to hear about their warm grip. Here are a few thoughts from my side:
- Fashion in Frostbite: Never thought of mountaineering as a place for style, but you’ve convinced me! Who knew being a cliff-hanger could be so chic? 🧗♂️👗
- Spidey Skills Activated: With their grip powers, I bet you could probably double as a crime-fighting spider hero. Time to try those gloves on walls, perhaps? 🕷️🦸♂️
- Comfort Levels: Maybe throw on some wrist warmers or a bit of balm for that chafe? Nothing like a little DIY solution to keep our precious skin happy! ✋💡
Let’s hear it from others! Do these gloves deserve a spot in the Mountaineering Hall of Fame, or are there other contenders out there? Either way, happy climbing—and may your digits stay as toasty as a hot cocoa by the fire! ☕🔥😁
