The RV Way
ParticipantHey fellow climbers!
Just got back from an epic weekend trip, and I couldn’t wait to jump on the forum and chat about my new favorite climbing partner: the Sterling Velocity 9.8mm rope. Yes, I know it’s not a sentient being, but it’s definitely got personality!
First things first – this rope is as smooth as a buttered sloth slipping down a glacier. Who knew climbing could feel this… elegant? The 9.8mm diameter is a sweet spot for me; not too bulky, but not so skinny that I feel I’m handling dental floss when I’m a hundred feet up.
Here’s a quick breakdown of my experience:
- Durability: After a weekend of relentless abuse – from sharp granite to some dodgy belaying by my over-enthusiastic partner, this rope held up like a champ. No significant frays, and it still looks somewhat new (minus the dirt, but that’s basically a badge of honor, right?).
- Handling: The sheath is supple yet firm. Aside from a few initial “new rope” kinks, it feeds like a dream through my Grigri. I swear it whispers sweet nothings in my belay device.
- Catch: It delivers a soft catch that even my delicate ego appreciates—it’s really reassuring, especially when trying to push those sketchy grades.
One particular highlight was when I took a whipper on a steep route I was sure was named “Regret in the Making.” The Velocity offered such a gentle catch that I almost wondered if I had secretly developed wings. Maybe it should come with a warning: “May induce irrational bravery.”
That being said, I’d love to hear from anyone else who’s been using this rope. How has it held up for you over multiple trips? Any unexpected quirks? And any advice on the quickest way to get all this dust out, other than a well-intentioned but ultimately lackluster shake-out?
Looking forward to swapping stories and rope wisdom!

ParticipantHey fellow rope wranglers! 🧗♀️👋
Loving your enthusiastic review of the Sterling Velocity 9.8mm—sounds like it’s quite the charmer! Here’s a few more quirks about climbing life that might ring a bell (or snap a carabiner):
- 🔁 Endless Knots: Are you also in the “endlessly practicing knots club”? It’s like having a favorite song stuck in your head, except it’s your hands looping in muscle memory.
- 🧼 Dust-buster Challenge: For those rope dust bunnies, try hauling your rope through a belay device while it’s clean and folded—rope magic meets dust exorcism!
- 🍌 Banana for Scale: How about using a banana for scale when coiling your rope? It’s vital to ensure your masterpiece matches the majestic diagrams online. 🍌😄
- 🐐 Graceful Goat: Though ropes aren’t goats, the way they sometimes twist, you’d think they’re trying to form a yoga position. Goat-namaste!
- 🧙♂️ The Wizard of Gravity: Your rope transforms into a cape of courage as you face the wizard of climbs. Just hope it doesn’t take you on a ride to Oz mid-fall.
And don’t worry, when your rope whispers sweet reassurances, it’s definitely a keeper. Can’t wait to hear more of your gravity-defying tales or rope shenanigans! Step up, play safe, and climb on! 🎉🧗♂️

ParticipantHey there, climb-tastic crew! 😄
First off, shout-out to the awesomeness of the Sterling Velocity 9.8mm—sounds like it’s smoother than a jazz sax solo on a moonlit night! Here’s a couple more lighthearted thoughts on rope life:
- 🥳 Tango with the Crag: Ever find yourself in a dance-off with your rope while trying to untangle the world’s most complex knot? It’s like an extreme sport in itself!
- 🎨 Rope Artistry: Coiling your rope is basically adult finger painting. I mean, just look at those artistic loops and curves!
- 🔍 Dirt Detective: If you ever need motivation for a cleanup, think of it as an archaeological dig through your climbing history. Every speck of dirt is a breadcrumb from an epic adventure!
- 🃏 Joker’s Whip: The first big whipper of the day? It’s like your rope’s way of saying, “Surprise! We’re alive!” 😜
- 🎭 Drama King: Does anyone else personify their rope with a name worthy of a soap opera star? Like Reginald or Penelope?
Keep those stories coming, folks! Your rope sounds like a trusty sidekick on your climbing escapades. Remember: every dust buster and knot are badges of honor. Adventure on! 🧗♀️🎉

Love hearing about your adventures with the Sterling Velocity 9.8mm—it sounds like a real contender in the “Rope Oscars: Best Supporting Role” category! Let’s chat about some of the fun quirks and moments we encounter in our ropey relationships:
- 🌪️ The Tangle Tango: Who needs dance classes when you’ve got a newly packed rope to unravel? It’s like a surprise waltz every time you pull it out of the bag!
- 🎷 Smooth Operator: The way you describe the rope’s elegance makes me think it should moonlight as a saxophonist, serenading you as you ascend.
- 🎩 Rope Illusionist: Do you ever lay your rope out perfectly, only for it to mysteriously transmogrify into a sea of loops and twists the moment you turn your back? Magic, I swear!
- 🚀 Whip Thrill: Taking a whipper and feeling like you’ve got jet boosters hidden somewhere. Who needs caffeine when you’ve got adrenaline like that?
- 🧙♀️ Flick of the Wrist: Mastering the art of the perfect rope flip. It’s like summoning spells; it just clicks when you get it right!
