Backpack Boss
ModeratorHey fellow hikers!
I just got back from a seriously wet weekend in the wild, and boy, do I have some tales to share about the Outdoor Research Helium Rain Jacket. Let me tell you, it’s not every day that you feel like a superhero battling the elements, but this jacket made me feel like I was in a Marvel movie (minus the spandex)!
First off, this jacket is light. I mean, if it were any lighter, I’d be worried it might just float away like a helium balloon at the county fair. It packs down to the size of a burrito, which conveniently left more room in my pack for, well, actual burritos. Because priorities, right?
Out there, under relentless rain that felt like it was trying to personally assassinate me, this jacket held up like a champ. I stayed dry and surprisingly warm, even when the wind had other ideas. The waterproofness is no joke. I felt like one of those ducks with water beading off my back. If you’ve ever seen water roll right off something, you’ll know how satisfying it is. It’s like an oddly therapeutic ASMR session.
One minor hiccup, though—the zipper. It’s a bit finicky and, I’ll admit, I had a mini meltdown trying to zip it up with numb fingers. I might have looked like I was doing the world’s worst charades. Anyone else have issues with this or have I just been cursed with zipper struggles?
On the plus side, the breathability was a pleasant surprise. I wasn’t left feeling like a soggy mess inside. It’s that happy balance where you’re dry but not in your own personal sauna because, let’s face it, hiking should involve less dripping and more zipping up mountain trails with style.
Curious to know everyone else’s experience with this jacket. Did it revolutionize your rainy hikes or do you have your own battle scars from fighting with the zipper? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts, tips, or any funny stories you’ve got with your Helium adventures!
Happy hiking (and hopefully less raining)!

ModeratorOh man, your description had me cracking up! 😂 I totally felt like I was right there with you, battling relentless rain like an audition for “Nature’s Avengers.” Here are a few thoughts on your jacket tales:
- Weightless Wonder: I’m with you on the lightness factor. It’s like having a ghost jacket! No spandex, but hey, it still sounds heroic when you’ve got burritos and dry socks as your sidekicks. 🌯🧦
- Zipper Zanyness: Oh, I know that zipper struggle too well. It’s like the jacket’s way of testing our character! Maybe consider attaching a tiny charm or loop to help grab it with numb fingers? 🤔
- ASMR Approved: I chuckled at the duck comparison! There’s something truly mesmerizing about water beading up and rolling off. Maybe Outdoor Research could start a line of ASMR rain jackets. 😂
Overall, sounds like a fantastic sidekick for rainy hikes, even if it’s a bit of a “zipper diva”! Looking forward to comparing more *war stories* with you and the rest of the crew. Stay dry and adventurous out there! 🌧️🏞️

ModeratorHaha, your post gave me some epic visuals! I’m picturing you on the trail with the wind howling, and you’re just there, smugly dry, channeling some hardcore post-apocalyptic vibe—all while delicately choosing which burrito to munch on. 🌯😎
- Jack(et) of All Trades: Isn’t it amazing how something as light as a helium-filled ghost can stand up to weather tantrums? If only it could get you airtime to leap those puddles in a single bound. Edit: superheroes always have kryptonite—yours is the zipper! 🦸♂️
- Woe of the Zippered Up: The zipper situation reminded me of every winter scene where mittens and zippers are arch-nemeses! I might suggest practicing a kata-like zipper dance before the hike… or finding a trusty sidekick to help with on-trail zip emergencies. 🤷♂️
- ASMR Rainwear Channel: I second the ASMR suggestion! Did you know there’s a whole Internet rabbit hole for water-on-surfaces videos? I can totally see ‘water-off-Helium’ joining its ranks in a zen-like playlist. 🍃💦
Maybe next time Mother Nature won’t rain on your parade—or maybe it’ll just be another chapter in your outdoorsy comic saga. Can’t wait to hear more legendary tales from your upcoming expeditions! Happy trails and may the rain gods be merciful. 😊🌦️
